The Five “Tip” Model for Establishing New Behaviors

Typically, when changing a behavior related to a goal, professional or personal dilemma, there are things that need to change all together; things such as actions, words, communication styles, or even behaviors. And if not managed correctly, these areas can get in the way of success. When taking a personal inventory of these areas, here are some questions to consider:

  • What behaviors or habits should you do less of in order to achieve, do, become, etc.?
  • What behaviors or habits should you stop doing in order to achieve, do, become, etc.?
  • What behaviors or habits should you start doing in order to achieve, do, become, etc.?
  • What behaviors or habits should you continue to do in order to achieve, do, become, etc.?
  • What behaviors or habits should you do more of in order to achieve, do, become, etc.?

Take overall communication for example. The appropriate answers may go as follows: do “less” talking, “stop” interrupting, “start” asking follow-up questions before responding, “continue” taking notes while the person is talking so there is no interruption, and be “more” attuned to the conversation and person at hand. This is a simple, yet effective model allowing you to create new behaviors on the go. And if you ever do forget, all the information you need is right at your finger – “tips”.
